SMS Marketing

arity of text messaging coupled with the immediate delivery to its audience is making marketing via SMS the newest trend for small businesses. With the ability to reach thousands of people at one time and in a more personal way than billboards and television and with significantly less cost SMS advertising is riding a wave that will only continue to swell. Research shows that 94% of all text messages are read, meaning that your message will be viewed by almost everyone it is sent out to.
While there are some demographics who object to receiving text message advertising, others are more in tune and would accept media advertising via their cell phone. Michael Hanley’s research at Ball State University shows that one in ten college students have received mobile ads and twenty-eight percent think getting movie and restaurant coupons on their cell phone is a good idea.
Getting the ad to the end-user is usually a combination task using another marketing media to introduce the mobile market to the text message version. For example, if you watch American Idol or Dancing with the Stars, you have the option to text message in your vote; Coke Rewards has a text message option for inputting codes – once the consumer opts in, text advertising is sent out on a near daily basis. Other ways to reach your audience is to offer a text message opt-in via your website or POS. Some marketing campaigns may purchase opt-in lists of subscribers, but this is not a recommended practice and is not in full compliance with FCC laws banning spam on handsets.
So far in this new media for advertising the biggest drawback has been that most mobile messengers only carry a limited amount of text messages on their cell phone plan and some plans charge for both incoming and out-bound text messages. Cell phone companies are working on better plans that allow for unlimited text messages without the exuberant fees. Marketing companies in the mean time must use the opt-in and opt-out method so that the audience has chosen to have the messages received. When sending the advertising reaches the point that there is no cost to the consumer the true results from text message advertising will be seen.
Whatever marketing method chosen small business owners should begin to explore text message marketing as another method of reaching the masses and putting their products and message directly in the hands of the consumer. Instant exposure for a generation who demands instant gratification has never been easier.
